Telling the stories of people, brands and investment from the local community to global business
Biography
Hi, I am a commercial photographer with more than 25 years experience and I have a passion for shooting creative imagery for design, advertising, corporate and private clients. I am based in London although I work throughout the UK and globally, both on location and in the studio. I am equally at ease photographing in the boardroom, on a production line, in a care home or on a construction site. I am known for my engaging, energising and approachable manner that puts people at ease whether they are the subject of a portrait study or an art director needing to get that little bit more from a shoot.
I started my career as a darkroom printer in the age of film, paper and chemicals, then moved on to assisting many of the photographers I was once printing for. Working alongside leading photographers in specialisms such as portraiture, fashion and beauty, architecture, still life, industrial, landscape and automotive photography allowed me to gain a deeper understanding of the art, craft and style of creating great images for demanding clients. I have long since been working digitally, however my instinct for creating images with depth, tone, texture and balance originates from those years spent hand crafting prints in the darkroom.
Inspired by the stories of Laurie Lee, at the age of 21 I spent a year traveling through Spain photographing the working people I met along the way, the marginalised gitano community and the drama of the rural landscape. That body of work led to editorial commissions from magazines such as Harpers & Queen, Campaign and Management Today and in turn to many of the clients I continue to work with.
I live in South London with my wife and two children. I enjoy travel and exploring London with the kids; reading, movies and cooking; time spent with friends over a good meal and a glass of wine; cycling in the country lanes of Kent and Surrey or over the cobbles and bergs of Flanders, sometimes to the summit of an Alpine climb; and listening to music from The Clash to Johnny Cash, Miles to Mary J, Dub to Disco.
The very first time I picked up a camera I realised it was a tool that would allow me to explore the world I live in and to look at that world in a creative way. I love the way a photograph can turn the ordinary, mundane or overlooked into something unique and precious, that through the eye and craft of a photographer and the effect of light and shadow, an everyday object, scene or event can become new and interesting, beautiful or provocative. The camera enables me to connect with our world in new ways and allows me to be a storyteller, a curator, a witness, an alchemist.
Testimonial
I have commissioned Bob over the past +20 years and we have worked together on many varied projects. He has consistently produced creative and beautiful photography and has the lovely ability to communicate with people from the factory floor to the Boardroom. He is great at following a brief and taking art direction, but also trusted to work directly with our clients when the situation arises, knowing he will get the shots required and keep everybody happy.
